Taking action as women
Narration (women.mp3, 567 KB)
How would society be without the constant support and contribution of more than fifty percent of its active population? Getting involved as a woman is not a modern fact. The history of native societies has always witnessed it.
First nations' women got excluded from government by European missionaries and politicians when they refused their presence during negotiations. Thus, they broke the natural alliance that was previously established between native men and women. This situation still remains. This is why native women created associations to defend their inherent rights and to take part in decisions that affect all members of their nations.
Over thirty years, native women's political associations have been created throughout Canada. Time enough for grand mothers to see their grand daughters also getting involved and making the movement stronger everday.
