Preventing diabetes

Fichier audio Narration (prev_diabetes.mp3, 645 KB)

A wampum belt travels within native communities. On this belt, it says: "there is too much sugar in our veins". The message is powerful and warns our populations against a threat that is very real and difficult to overcome. In the past, wampums also traveled from one community to another.

The arrangement of symbolic patterns showed clearly the goals of communication and helped those who interpreted them to remember their particular messages. They could also warn a population against a dangerous enemy. This modern time enemy is diabetes.

Food taken from natural environment has always been the privilege of native people. It was appropriate and healthy. Today, excessively sweet and refined comestible products produce dangerous imbalances, not only for the body, but also for the mind. All the efforts made by health educators are tending towards one unique goal: bringing and maintaining optimal health for everyone.
